Next year we’ll be seeing the sequel to 2014’s surprise hit movie, Guardians of the Galaxy. With production now officially underway for the film, we’re starting to get some more information in regards to the cast and which characters and items will be returning for the sequel. From the sound of it, it looks like The Mad Titan Thanos and the Infinity Stones won’t be making a return in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

During a Facebook Q&A session, fans asked writer and directer James Gunn about what they could expect from the upcoming follow-up film. Thanos eventually came up as a topic.

“Thanos isn’t in this movie,” he confirmed. “I think he’s gonna have a little bit to do and say when it comes to a certain wars and infinity. We’ve got other fish to fry in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We’re not really so much about the Infinity Stones in Guardians 2. Is that a spoiler? It’s not really a thing.”

“I’m dealing with this one story. It’s not like I have to change something now for something in the future. It’s more like whatever happens in the future will have to be changed by what’s created now.”

Thanos played by Josh Brolin, first appeared in 2012’s Avengers. Since then, he’s appeared in multiple films as a background figure that is manipulating certain parties and events from the shadows in order to acquire the six Infinity Stones and take on the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Infinity War. While Thanos hasn’t really done anything in the movies yet, his longest amount of scene time was in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Drax and Gamora, two of the main leads, have a personal history with him.

Infinity_stones_lowOut of the six Infinity Stones, the green and orange stones (which many speculate to be the Time and Soul Gem) are the only two that have yet to appear in any of the movies. In Guardians of the Galaxy, we saw the origin story of the Stones and the first appearance of the Orb aka the purple stone (possibly the Power Gem). The Tesseract aka the blue stone (possibly the Space Gem) was featured in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and 2012’s Avengers, the Aether aka the red stone (possibly the Reality Gem) was featured in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, and the yellow stone which has been confirmed as the Mind Stone, was inside of Loki’s Scepter in 2012’s Avengers and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Since Marvel wants the stones to spell out Thanos, the next two will most likely have H and N at the beginning of their titles.

guardians-galaxyWith Phase Three about to begin this May with Captain America: Civil War, only a handful of movies are set to come out before Avengers: Infinity War and most fans were expecting to see more of the Mad Titan in Guardians 2 due to his relationship with some of those characters. Fans were also expecting to see the Soul Gem in the movie due to a cocoon that appeared in last film that looked like it belonged to Adam Warlock or the Time Gem since the original Guardians of the Galaxy comic book run was filled with time traveling elements.

While we don’t know when Thanos is set to make his next appearance in the movies, we can probably expect to see the orange and green stones to turn up in either 2016’s Doctor Strange, 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, or 2019’s Captain Marvel.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently in pre-production and will be released on May 5, 2017. Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2 will hit theaters on May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 respectively.
